Sales of spectacles benefited strongly from growing tourist demand at the end of the review period. The United Arab Emirates is a popular shopping tourism destination with its numerous and famous shopping malls and wide range of luxury shopping options. This trend particularly benefited sunglasses, with luxury brands proving particularly successful in this area. There was however also a rise in medical tourism towards the end of the review period, with more tourists also being attracted by the country's eye health hospitals as a result.

Competitive Landscape

Luxottica is a strong leader in spectacles and accounted for an impressive value share of 41% in 2013, dwarfing second-ranked Optitalia with 6% share. This is mainly due to the strength of the company's iconic Ray-Ban brand, which led brand rankings with a strong 37% value share. Ray-Ban benefits from a classical stylish image and is a highly attractive brand to aspirational Emirati consumers and tourists visiting the country to shop. Ray-Ban is most famous for its sunglasses but is also a strong leader in spectacle frames. Luxottica also benefits from offering a number of other highly fashionable brands, including Vogue and Dolce & Gabbana in the top five spectacle frames brands and Vogue, Prada and Oakley in the top 10 sunglasses brands.

Industry Prospects

Strong luxury retail development is expected to fuel sales growth for spectacles in the forecast period, particularly in the wake of the opening of the Dubai Design District (d3) at the start of the forecast period. The United Arab Emirates is keen to develop itself as a luxury fashion hub in the region, with this focus likely to attract more luxury spectacles brands to the country. A strong focus on luxury fashion is meanwhile set to further increase the country's appeal as a shopping destination to high-income tourists.
