In 2013, mobile phones had Samsung Electronics Ukraine TOV the number one player in feature phones (44% of retail sales volume) and smartphones (36%). The company is well-known to Ukrainian consumers through a bunch of other consumer electronics and appliances products, and in mobile phones it was additionally noted for active new product development and balanced pricing. Nokia Ukraine TOV, the former leader, continued losing share, both in feature phones and mobile phones (dropping to 41% and 15% respectively) since consumers found it supplying phones of inferior quality than at the time of entry, and its innovations were not particularly successful or outstanding.
The future of mobile phones in Ukraine is forecast to be dampened by the unfavourable economic and political situation, further threatened by Russias military intrusion in the country and Crimeas annexation in 2014. Ukrainians are likely to become much more cautious with spending their money on a number of products, and consumer electronics are expected see the greatest economising. Replacement cycles will become longer and cheaper models will be considered during the most difficult periods of economic uncertainty, especially at the beginning of the forecast period. Compared with the review period, when mobile phones through retail grew by 17% in volume terms in total, the forecast growth over 2013-2018 is predicted to stand at just 3%. Apart from economising, the category will be subject to eventual saturation in both feature phones and smartphones.
