In 2015, peso depreciation will be a drag on the market value growth, whereas lower oil prices should feed through to a higher spending power at the consumer level. Low penetration of smartphones and tablets should continue to be the key drivers of Chile's consumer electronics market over our forecast period, helped by their growing affordability and the advent of the USD100 smartphone.

Headline Expenditure Projections

Computer sales: USD1.269bn in 2015 to USD1.368bn in 2016, 7.8% in US dollar terms. Unit growth is being driven by the boom in tablet sales, but with additional volume concentrated at the low-end, and peso depreciation forecast for 2015, we expect a contraction in market value.

AV sales: USD1.198bn in 2015 to USD1.214bn in 2016, +1.3% in US dollar terms. After a boost to TV set sales in 2014 as a result of the FIFA World Cup in Brazil, we expect a marked slowdown in sales growth in 2015.

Handset sales: USD895mn in 2015 to USD918mn in 2016, +2.6% in US dollar terms. A continued boom in smartphone volumes will ensure continued growth in value terms, but increasing saturation and peso depreciation mean growth is expected to slow from the rate seen in 2014.

Key Trends & Developments

Browsing traffic data indicate Motorola has made major inroads into the Chilean smartphone market, which, combined with the threat stemming from the international expansion of Chinese smartphone vendor operations, has hit vendors with a long history in the region. One struggling player in the Android ecosystem in Chile is Sony, with performance very weak considering the efforts it put in to promote its Xperia Z handset in 2013. The device offers a 13-megapixel camera and was expected to put Sony in more direct competition with Samsung's Galaxy range. However, browsing traffic data shows that Sony failed to gain momentum with its new handset. In September 2014 Sony announced it was withdrawing from the Latin American smartphone market to focus on...
