Home laundry appliances registered an increase of 4% in value terms in 2014, while retail volume sales grew by 1%. The combined factors of high current household penetration and an increasing share of sales for higher-end machines supported value growth in outpacing volume. Leading brands, such as Samsung, LG and Maytag, enjoyed a higher share of premium models than entry level or value machines, as demand for features and efficiency led to relative stagnation in the number of machines being sold, yet at higher retail price points.

Competitive Landscape

Whirlpool was the leading manufacturer in the category with a volume share of 46% in 2014, largely unchanged from the previous year. The company’s flagship range under the Whirlpool name was the leading brand in automatic washing machines, with a volume share of 30%, and remained constant throughout the review period, underpinning the leading position for Whirlpool as a manufacturer. Amana and Inglis registered declines in their shares in automatic washing machines to 3% each in volume terms in 2014, as a result of the lower-end positioning of these value brands in a category trending to higher-quality products. Amana and Inglis were also primarily available in white only, while design trends in machine styling moved toward stainless and colours for both washers and dryers.
