With the increasing need for mobility and rising affluence in Malaysia, many consumers are replacing their desktops with laptops or tablets. Consequently, 2014 will witness more households owning one or more laptops instead of sharing a desktop and also trading up to tablets for their convenience and cheaper unit price.

Competitive Landscape

In 2013, Acer continued its lead in computers and peripherals with a volume share of 18%. Dell followed behind with a volume share of 17%. Coupled with the intensifying competition, the economic uncertainty in 2013 was the main reason for their flat growth during the year.

Industry Prospects

Computers and peripherals is expected to follow a positive trajectory in terms of volume growth in both retail and business over the forecast period. However, its growth is likely to be slower than over the review period, due to the already high penetration of computers and peripherals in the country. The demand for computers and peripherals will be concentrated in the replacement/upgrade market, with a marginal demand contributed by the first-time buyers, mainly from the rural areas. Furthermore, the shift in consumers’ preferences towards tablets and laptops has further weakened the growth of this product category.
