Without a long history in Hungary, roll-your-own tobacco became a cheap alternative for cigarettes in tobacco, and so, gained much more popularity when the unit price of machine-manufactured cigarettes began to rise considerably. Pipe tobacco, in contrary, has a long tradition in Hungary, although this decreased drastically nowadays.

Competitive Landscape

Imperial Tobacco Magyarország Kft retained its leading position in smoking tobacco and accounted for 35% retail volume share. Its leading position has been unquestionable, similarly to the review period, with its strong presence of Golden Gate, Symphonia and Drum brands. The company was able to enter RYO tobacco with its strong cigarette brands very early on, with enough time to develop them before other competitors entered.

Industry Prospects

The new, monopolised retail system impacted negatively on smoking tobacco as well, by drastically reducing the number of retailers where these products can be purchased. Further unit price increases in tobacco, however, are expected to be favourable for RYO tobacco, as more consumers will switch from manufactured cigarettes to RYO.
