In South Korea, the cigar market is not much developed yet and its volume sales continue to decline due to negative effects from unofficial purchasing through internet retailing. In 2013, standard cigars recorded retail volume sales of only 0.1 million sticks and cigarillos accounted for sales of only 0.5 million sticks. Retail volume sales of both categories declined in 2013, by 4% and 5%, respectively.

Competitive Landscape

Corporacion Habanos maintained the largest volume share of 35% in 2013 within cigars excluding cigarillos. Amongst its brands, Cohiba, Montecristo and Romeo y Julieta remained the most popular and famous brands and the former two brands increased their retail volume shares marginally. They are distributed through luxury channels such as hotels, bars and cigar specialists operated only for members.

Industry Prospects

Retail volume sales of cigars are expected to decrease at a CAGR of -4% over the forecast period. Its market size will reach only 0.5 million sticks in 2018 with both standard cigars and cigarillos decreasing constantly. In South Korea, the price of cigars is too expensive when compared to that of cigarettes, so consumers will continue to hesitate to try cigars over the forecast period. Therefore, leaving aside dedicated cigar smokers, it will be difficult for new consumers help the market to show positive growth rate.
