German pork producers will come under pressure, owing to the ban on meat imports from Western countries that has been imposed by Russian authorities. On the other hand, sugar production should expand at a stronger pace over the coming years, owing to an increase in growing areas and yields, as well as the potential end to EU's sugar production quota in 2017. Wheat output should also have a strong harvest in 2014/15, although there are some concerns over wheat quality owing to some wet spells.

Key Forecasts
  • Milk production growth to 2018: 5.8% to 31.9mn tonnes. Modest growth will be supported by export demand and higher prices and held back by sluggish domestic consumption and the demise of smaller producers.
  • Pork consumption growth to 2018: stagnant at 4.4mn tonnes. Although we expect lower prices to boost growth in 2014 and 2015, demand for pork has been on a downward trajectory since 2007 and we see no sustained let-up in this trend as consumers turn to healthier options.
  • Wheat production growth to 2017/18: 3.2% to 25.6mn tonnes from 2013/2014 forecasts. Wheat will gain some ground at the expense of other grains and sugar beet.
  • 2014 real GDP growth: 1.1 %; up from 0.4% in 2013 and forecast to average 1.5% from 2014 until 2018.
  • Consumer price inflation: 1.7% in 2014, up from 1.6% in 2013.
  • BMI Universe Agribusiness Market Value to shrink by 3.4% to USD34.22bn in 2014. Expected to shrink by 1.2% to USD35.0bn from 2013 to 2018.
Key Changes To Forecasts
  • Pork production to 2018: down 6.1% to 5.1mn tonnes (from a previous forecast of 5.6mn tonnes). Producers will struggle with loss of access to the Russian market.
Industry Developments

German pork producers will be among those hardest hit after in August Russia put in place a one-year long embargo on a range of goods, including all food products, from the EU, Norway, Switzerland, Australia, Canada and the US. In...
