Key Trends And Developments
- Data released by the principal operators suggest the market grew by 12,000 subscriptions in Q314, reversing the declining trend seen since over Q413-Q114. Mobile broadband will be the key data growth driver for the coming years, it has displayed a steady growth as subscriber numbers increased 4.4% year-on-year (y-o-y) to 822,422 in 2013 from 787,651 in the previous year.
- Regulator NPT reports that there were 1.236mn fixed telephony connections in Norway at the end of 2013. This represented a y-o-y decrease of 11.3% from 1.394mn in December 2012
Following an unsuccessful auction round to acquire 800MHz, 900MHz and 1800MHz bands in December 2013, Tele2 chose to divest its Norwegian assets. TeliaSonera announced acquiring Tele2's assets, but the deal is subject to regulatory approval and due to be finalised in 2015. With the acquisition TeliaSonera increased its 4G coverage considerably and vowed to reach 98% of the population with 4G coverage by 2016. Reportedly, the newcomer Access Industries, that secured spectrum Tele2 missed out on, aims to build its 4G network by 2015. BMI believes that this could create increased competition for data services, especially since incumbent Telenor was able to increase its Q314 revenues...

The Norwegian telecommunications market faces a change of dynamics following the exit of Tele2, one of the largest operators in July 2014, albeit the deal is still pending regulatory approval. This is set to bring about redistribution of market shares. The country's second largest operator TeliaSonera will boost its market share having acquired Tele2 assets, while newcomer Access Industries is poised to erode the market share of both incumbent Telenor and TeliaSonera having secured necessary bandwidth and financing to increase its presence in Norwegian market. In the first quarter following the acquisition of Tele2, there has been no notic e able redistribution of market shares.
