The popularity of pipe smoking in New Zealand remained negligible in 2013, accounting for less than 1% of total smoking tobacco volume sales during 2013. Typical consumers are elderly men with moderate to high disposable levels of income. An emerging trend amongst younger smokers is shisha smoking. Shisha smoking originates from the Middle East, where a stemmed instrument is used to smoke flavoured tobacco which is cooled and filtered by passing it through water. Another factor is that the smoke given off from pipe smoking is considered to be less unpleasant than cigarette smoke. Shisha smoking is subject to the same regulations as other forms of tobacco and the flavour element is not infused with the tobacco, but is a separate consumable.

Competitive Landscape

There were three major players within smoking tobacco in New Zealand during 2013: British American Tobacco (New Zealand); Imperial Tobacco New Zealand; and Scandinavian Tobacco Group. All three of these companies are multinational players, meaning that smoking tobacco in New Zealand during 2013 was dominated by foreign companies, with no major domestic activity recorded.

Industry Prospects

Annual excise tax increases levied every January, the recent retail display ban and the impending plain tobacco packaging are all expected to have a negative impact on volume growth in smoking tobacco over the forecast period. As such, volume sales of smoking tobacco are expected to decline at a CAGR of -4% over the forecast period. Nevertheless, this decline is set to be a more favourable performance than the volume CAGR of -6% recorded in the category over the review period. During the second half of the review period, excise tax increases for smoking tobacco were much higher than the excise tax increases recorded in cigarettes and cigars. Consequently, volume growth is expected to remain negative in smoking tobacco over the forecast period, although not as severe as the volume decline recorded in the category over the review period.
