Spectacular growth for tablets and signs of stabilisation for the rest of computers and peripherals were the main stories in 2014. Total volume sales of tablets rocketed by 264% in 2013 and by another 61% in 2014, to reach 694,800 units – and restructured the landscape of the Greek market. Significant reductions in prices and increasing sales of 7’’ Wi-Fi devices boosted sales of tablets. There is a clear move towards lower-priced models, with the majority of tablets sold costing under €200, whilst nearly a third of total sales corresponded to tablets priced under €100. Despite the economic gloom, Greeks are increasingly embracing this new category, which addresses the current need for communication, mobility, entertainment and information.

Competitive Landscape

Hewlett-Packard Hellas (HP) maintained the leading position in computers and peripherals in Greece in 2013, with an 18% volume share. The company’s very strong reputation in computers and peripherals and stable unit prices helped HP to maintain its lead, even though the company experienced a decline in volume sales from 2010. Whilst its products are by no means considered the most fashionable in the market, Greek consumers are attracted by the legendary reliability of the HP brand. Furthermore, HP offers a complete range of products across all categories in computers and peripherals.

Industry Prospects

Stabilisation and recovery, signs of which were evident in computers and peripherals in 2014, will characterise the forecast period, and computers and peripherals is set to increase by a retail volume CAGR of 4%. Tablets and other portable computers is set to see the most dynamic performance, driving overall volume sales in computers and peripherals, whilst laptops is set to maintain its volume sales. The performance of these categories will, however, come at the expense of desktops, which is set to continue losing ground throughout the forecast period.
