Smoking tobacco registered a minimal decline in volume sales in 2013, this being a consequence of the very cold weather during the first quarter which made it uncomfortable to smoke outdoors. The decline in the smoking population and the third round of tax increases for RYO tobacco that came into effect in January 2013 also had a negative impact on demand.

Competitive Landscape

Reemtsma remained the strongest player in smoking tobacco in 2013 and also increased its share. Reemtsma’s flagship brand in RYO tobacco is John Player Special, which ranked third in 2013. Ranked second was British American Tobacco, with its leading Pall Mall brand.

Industry Prospects

Smoking tobacco is set to post a small but continuous decline in volume sales over the forecast period. Sales will be restrained as a result of increased taxation and a decline in the smoking population. Graphic images of diseased organs will have to be printed on packaging probably from 2016. In value terms at constant 2013 prices, smoking tobacco is predicted a positive CAGR of 3% due to increased unit prices.
