Headline Expenditure Projections
Computer Hardware Sales: USD860mn in 2013 to USD916mn in 2014, +6.5% in US dollar terms. Growth potential still exists in both the desktop and notebook markets despite the impact of cannibalisation by tablets, which are expected to continue outperforming.
AV Sales: USD998mn in 2013 to USD1.1bn in 2014, +5.5% in US dollar terms. Flat-screen TV set demand is growing, but declining demand for digital cameras and mp3 players a drag on growth.
Handset Sales: USD774mn in 2013 to USD855mn in 2014, +10.4% in US dollar terms. Handset sales forecast to be the outperforming market segment as smartphones increase as a share of sales, boosting average selling price for the overall handset market.
Key Trends & Developments
- In September 2014, the government of Peru postponed the switchover from analogue to digital terrestrial television (DTT) by five years, according to the country's Minister of Transport and Communications Jose Gallardo Ku....
Peru's market for consumer electronics is projected to expand rapidly fuelled by rising incomes and falling prices for devices. This should be helped by the entrance of Entel and Viettel into the mobile market, as the increased competition will benefit uptake in mobile handsets and smartphones. Cheaper smartphones and wider availability of 3G will also contribute to the strong growth, as players such as Firefox OS, look to provide lower cost models. Our economic growth outlook sees middle-class incomes rising, which yields a positive outlook for demand for notebooks, tablets and flat-screen TVs. However, we caution that risks are largely weighted to the downside as weaker metals prices put pressure on the growth outlook. Delays in the switchover from analogue to digital TV might also have a negative impact on TV sales. BMI forecasts consumer electronics sales to grow by 7.3% in 2014, backed by a rise in consumer spending and low penetration of devices such as PCs and smartphones.
