The challenging Greek telecoms climate eased noticeably in the second quarter of 2014 as take-up of wireline broadband services drove customer and revenue growth at key operators such as OTE , Hellas Online (HOL) and ForthNet . In part, this is due to the wider availability of OTE's VDSL network, which alternative operators are now tapping into and making it easier for consumers to access subscription video services. The incumbent's pay-TV business still is not growing as quickly as it might like, provoking it to table an offer for ForthNet's Nova TV platform. In response, Vodafone and WIND submitted a joint offer for the whole of ForthNet. With Vodafone having gained approval to take control of HOL, it is clear the Greek market is about to be radically reshaped to allow for the emergence of rich media communications services.

Key Data
  • Mobile subscription addition rates were stronger in Q214 than had been expected, possibly due to increased price competition and the wider availability of 3G/4G networks. Subscriptions grew by 0.2% quarter-on-quarter (q-o-q) to 15.537mn.
  • The inclusion of inactive or rarely-used subscriptions weighs on ARPU figures disclosed by operators. Cosmote continued to outpace Vodafone in blended ARPU in Q214, with the latter recording ARPU erosion linked to termination rate reductions, as well as a winnowing of its subscription records. BMI forecasts ARPUs to continue declining from 2014 to 2018.
  • Alternative wireline operators - which include the fixed-line business of mobile-focused WIND - generally recorded strong growth in customers served by unbundled local loops in Q214, testament to the power of price competition, access to advanced infrastructure and an easing of macroeconomic headwinds.
