Laptops (and desktops to a lesser extent) are losing out on sales as consumers’ form preferences have begun to shift, favouring the portability and relatively attractive price points that netbooks and tablets both provide. Not only can a tablet cost up to US$1,000 less than a laptop or desktop, but for a few hundred dollars more consumers can buy a netbook which enables access to a keyboard and more traditional computer software and functionality. With total volume sales of netbooks increasing by 23% and those of tablets and other portable computers by 9% in 2014, consumers are resoundingly answering that they are willing to sacrifice screen size and computing capability so long as they are able to get their work done and have easy access to entertainment.

Competitive Landscape

Apple Inc continued to hold the largest retail volume share within computers in 2013, accounting for 36% of all sales with its 37 million units. The company has benefited from having been the first mover in tablets with its innovative iPad, in addition to simply keeping all components of its ecosystem in-house and using this centralised nature to create products that are easy to use with one another. The company also benefits from its perception as fashionable, catering to creative types, college students and the affluent by having sleek design, quality (if not overpriced) specifications and store-based retail outlets which feature products alongside helpful support staff. Apple’s retail volume share of computers was slightly eroded in 2013 due to increases in shares amongst Microsoft Corp, Amazon.com Inc and Samsung Corp within the tablets and other portable computers arena. That being said, the company still sold 16% more units in 2013 than in 2012 off the back of its tablets, a sign that demand for its products is still very much alive.

Industry Prospects

Computers and peripherals in the US is expected to see retail volume sales decline by a CAGR of 4% over the forecast period, reflective of its overall maturity and the high penetration of products amongst average consumers. For computers, the retail volume sales decline will be marginally lower although still falling by a CAGR of 3%, amounting to 88 million units in 2018. For peripherals, the unit decline is expected to be even worse, with a forecast decrease in retail volume sales at CAGR of 10%, amounting to 14 million units in 2018.
