Russia Consumer Electronics Report Q4 2014
Headline Expenditure Projections
Computer H ardware S ales: USD12.6bn in 2013 to USD11.3bn in 2014, -10.4% in US dollar terms. A combination of rouble depreciation, tighter credit market conditions (meaning a drag on big-ticket purchases) and the shift in device sales mix to low-cost tablets will make computer hardware the underperforming segment in 2014.
AV Sales: USD9.8bn in 2013 to USD9.4bn in 2014, -4.1% in US dollar terms. The FIFA World Cup in Brazil provided a boost to the TV set market, but with unfavourable economic conditions and continued erosion of digital camera demand by smartphone ownership AV spending is forecast to contract in 2014.

Following the imposition of sanctions against Russia in mid-2014 we have revised our outlook for consumer electronics spending growth. There will be minimal direct impact on supply chains and access to goods, but the economic consequences, including significant rouble depreciation, tighter credit conditions and an erosion of consumer confidence, will be a drag on spending. Although there is short-term downside, which we expect to translate to a contraction in market value in US dollar terms in 2014, w e expect to see growth in Russian Consumer Electronics over the medium term as the political and economic environment stabilises. Spending growth will be driven by demand for smartphones, smart TVs and tablets/ultra-thin notebooks and potentially wearable devices in the latter years of our forecast . Penetration in most device categories remains low by developed market standards but with local players such as YotaDevices , Explay and FLY beginning to make an impact in the market, we expect strong uptake to be maintained over the medium term . We now expect spending to increase at a compound annual growth rate of 1.1 % 2014-2018, to reach a value of USD 32.6 bn in 2018.
