A strong performance of smartphones and tablets negatively impacted imaging devices in 2013, which registered an 18% decline in volume sales. In this year, smart mobile phones and tablets increased their penetration rates in Brazilian households from 31% to 66% and from 6% to 14%, respectively. Increasingly featuring high built-in cameras, the main reason for consumers to prefer these products over imaging devices resides on social media connectivity. Budget compact cameras and camcorders, which account for the bulk of sales in Brazil, usually do not offer internet connectivity. This is particularly important in Brazil due to the high popularity of social media amongst internet users there. According to comScore, 97% of the Brazilian online population uses social media. Indeed, the Wall Street Journal named the country the "Social Media Capital of the Universe".

Industry Prospects

Imaging devices are set to see volume sales decrease at a CAGR of -11% over the forecast period to measure 2.6 million units in 2018. With trends witnessed in 2013 anticipated to continue, traditional fixed lens cameras and point-and-shoot cameras will be edged out of the market by smartphones and tablets, and potentially by wearable technology as new devices are developed that may well include cameras.
