In 2013, computers and peripherals saw a 17% increase in retail volume sales, mainly driven by a strong performance of tablets. With the exception of tablets and netbooks, all categories showed a deceleration of volume sales in comparison with 2012. As there is a significant installed base of desktops and laptops in Brazilian households, many consumers opted to purchase their first tablet rather than to replace an old computer device. The relatively low price of tablets also contributed to this preference, given a challenging macroeconomic scenario in 2013, which was marked by increasing inflation and interest rates as well as household indebtedness.

Competitive Landscape

In 2013, Samsung Eletronica da Amazonia maintained its leading position in retail computer and peripherals registering an 18% volume share. The company overtook the long-time leaders Hewlett-Packard and Positivo Informatica through investments in local production and aggressive marketing and pricing strategies in Brazil.

Industry Prospects

Computers and peripherals are set to increase volume sales at a 5% CAGR over the forecast period, mainly driven by tablets' strong performance. Although growth in the sales of tablets will negatively impact laptops, this last category will show a growth of 1% in volume sales in the same period, due to the fact that laptops' functionality is still irreplaceable for many consumers.
