2012 was dubbed ‘the year of tablets’ in Hungary as volume sales doubled in the category over the course of the year amidst negative growth in other consumer electronics categories durable markets, which was due to the limited purchasing power of the majority of Hungarian households and static growth in disposable income levels. The rising demand for tablets essentially saved computers from catastrophic declines during 2012, with buoyant volume growth in tablets supporting overall growth in computers.

Competitive Landscape

The three leading brands in desktops in Hungary at the end of the review period remained Lenovo, Acer and HP. Lenovo managed to increase its volume share in desktops to 17% in 2012, while Acer’s value shared declined to 15% and HP’s volume share increased by two percentage points to 12%. Due to the lower price positioning of Lenovo and HP, these brands continue to gain volume share in desktops at the expense of Acer, a brand which has seen its volume sales declining in all computers categories in Hungary as well as at global level.

Industry Prospects

Computers and peripherals is expected to increase in constant value at a CAGR of 1% over the forecast period, while retail volume sales are set to increase at a CAGR of 7%. This growth is expected to result mainly from the soaring demand for tablets and the anticipated recovery in demand for laptops due to the prolonged replacement cycle towards the end of the review period, which resulted in the need to replace products more frequently over the forecast period. Desktops and netbooks, on the other hand, are two computers categories which are set to register significant declines in both retail volume and constant value terms over the forecast period. Peripherals is set to decline in retail volume at a CAGR of -1% over the forecast period, while constant value sales are set to decline at a CAGR of -2%.
