Although consumer purchasing power declined further in Portugal during 2013, demand for smartphones did not stop rising as consumers sought out the latest smartphones which offer multiple functions on the move. Volume sales of smartphones increased by 29% in 2013 following the 38% volume growth recorded in the category during 2012 and this strong positive trend helped to counteract the declines recorded in feature phones, a category of increasingly outdated products which declined in volume by 24% in 2012 and by 26% in 2013.

Competitive Landscape

Samsung-Electrónica Portuguesa SA remained the leading player in mobile phones in Portugal in 2012 with a 38% volume share, an increase of seven percentage points from 2011. Samsung has continued to develop new designs and now offers a very wide variety of products in the category at different price points, which has fuelled the popularity of the Samsung brand in Portugal. Samsung has stood out for many years, particularly among the manufacturers of high-end smartphones and the Samsung Galaxy SIII has performed well as the main alternative to Apple’s iPhone since its launch in June 2012, while the Samsung Galaxy Note has also performed very well in Portugal since its launch at the end of 2011.
