Despite the proliferation of tablets, consumers retained their laptops or desktops for more intense usage, be it at home or the office. However, the need for convenience and portability drove consumers to increasingly replace their desktops with laptops. Consumers’ rising disposable incomes at the end of the review period coupled with the affordable prices of laptops also witnessed more households owning one laptop per family member instead of sharing one desktop. This in turn contributed 7% retail volume growth to laptops and 4% decline for desktops during 2012.

Competitive Landscape

Acer still led with 18% share and Dell second with 16% in computers and peripherals. Increased competition within computers, especially the proliferation of tablets caused both players to lose volume share during the year.

Industry Prospects

Computers and peripherals is expected to record positive volume growth in both business and retail over the forecast period, although at a slower pace than the review period. The increased penetration of computers and peripherals will be the key limitation behind a continued high growth rate for the forecast period. Consumers’ switch from desktops and netbooks to laptops as well as tablets will also restrict the overall growth potential for computers over the forecast period.
