In 2013, two major trends defined the mobile phone market in Germany; on the one hand, societal and demographic developments drive sales and penetration of mobile phones in general, constantly changing the ratio between households with fixed-line phones and those with mobile phones only in favour of mobile phones, and on the other hand, more and more people are convinced of the benefits and advantages of smartphones and thus are switching to those instead of feature phones. Introducing different levels of pricing within the smartphone market also opens it up to people who are not as well of as others, thereby increasing the range of potential customers, too.

Competitive Landscape

While Samsung Corp and Apple Inc surpassed Nokia Corp in volume sales shares of the smartphone market in 2011 already, still maintaining the lead in 2012 with shares of 27% and 25%, Nokia remains strong in feature phones, keeping its leading position with a share of 46%. Even though Nokia suffered severe losses in terms of volume sales of smartphones, due to a lack of innovation and technological advance, their popularity and reputation for feature phones is unbroken. Within smartphones, Samsung and Apple keep battling for market shares by constantly introducing new features and versions of their smartphones, currently with a competitive advantage for Samsung caused by its larger compatibility with other, non-proprietary systems and technologies and comparably lower price.

Industry Prospects

With a similar pace of development for both categories, smartphones and feature phones, over the forecast period, thereby keeping the balance established during the review period, it is not surprising that the CAGRs of the review period and of the forecast period are about 1%. While feature phones showed an enormous decrease during the review period, which slows down significantly, smartphones experienced the reverse effect in terms of growth rates, thereby creating a fairly stable and balanced overall market
