It is popular in Morocco for people to frequent shisha cafés in order to socialise and to share water pipes with their friends. However, the Moroccan authorities have banned smoking pipe tobacco in cafés as the inhabitants of neighbouring properties have often complain about the odours caused by the shisha smoke. In addition, these shisha cafés are often frequented by minors, mainly girls, while it is often suspected that the smoking tobacco used in these shisha cafés is laced with other drugs, specifically hashish. As a result, many shisha cafés in Morocco have been placed under pressure to close.

Competitive Landscape

Imperial Tobacco Maroc remains the only significant player operating in smoking tobacco in Morocco and accounted for 98% of total retail volume sales in the category during 2012. The company continues to invest in offering customers a variety of different types of smoking tobacco in various different flavours, which has so far been the key to the company’s success in the category. Following the liberalisation of the Moroccan tobacco industry, no player has entered the smoking tobacco, which remains dominated by the Nakhla brand, imported by Imperial Tobacco.

Industry Prospects

Morocco’s young population tend to regard the social smoking of shisha as an integral part of their socio-economic status and shisha is therefore a very popular aspect of virtually all social gatherings in Morocco. Smoking shisha is also perceived by many Moroccans to be less harmful than smoking cigarettes, which is set to boost demand further during the forecast period, stimulating growth in the category.
