The ongoing negative effects of the economic recession represented the main obstacle to positive growth returning to computers and peripherals in Greece during 2013. Falling disposable income levels and general financial insecurity loomed large in the collective consumer consciousness and the many interesting new product launches in computers and peripherals in 2012 and 2013 thus failed to spark consumer interest. The greatest social and economic problem currently facing Greece is the extremely high level of youth unemployment, which stood at almost 60% of the active population aged between 18 and 24 at the end of 2012. This is the population segment which is generally most actively interested in consumer electronics, especially with regards to new product developments.

Competitive Landscape

Hewlett-Packard Hellas SA (HP) maintained the leading position in computers and peripherals in Greece in 2012 with a 24% volume share. The company’s very strong reputation in computers and peripherals environment and stable unit prices helped HP to maintain its leadership even though the company has experienced a decline in volume sales since 2010. While its products are by no means considered the most fashionable in the category, Greek consumers are attracted by the HP brand’s legendary reliability. Furthermore, HP offers a complete range of products across all categories of computers and peripherals.

Industry Prospects

Stabilisation and recovery is expected to be evident in computers and peripherals from 2014 onwards, with the end result that computers and peripherals is set to increase in volume at a CAGR of 1% over the forecast period. Tablets and other portable computers is set to be the most dynamic category, driving overall volume sales in computers and peripherals, while laptops is also set to generate satisfactory growth, although mainly at the expense of desktops, which is set to continue losing ground throughout the forecast period.
